Today, I'm going to be a little lazy because I have tons of stuff to do. But here is my XLR8R review of Anthony "Shake" Shakir's retrospective collection, out soon on Rush Hour, as well as one of his most jackin' tracks for your listening pleasure.

Real Detroit techno heads have been repping Anthony "Shake" Shakir's work for years, but only a few outside of that small scene have given him his due, if only because his profile's rise has been restrained by health issues and limited-run releases. Thanks to Amsterdam's Rush Hour, though, Shake's obscure status is finished. A rhythm master in the truest sense of the phrase, Shake's many skills are displayed here: there's the jacked electro-funk of "The Floor Filler," the dusty Dilla-like beats of "Detroit State of Mind," and the dubby techno hypnotics of "Perseverance." Paired with tracks like "Assimilated," which sounds like a hissy predecessor to today's UK funky, or "Arise," which incorporates what might be the best Steely Dan sample in dance music history, Frictionalism guarantees that Shakir's amazing work will never be overlooked again.

The fourth installment of Dam-Funk's 5-LP debut Toeachizown drops October 20 on Stone Throw, and the theme for the latest chapter is 'hood,' music of the street corners and boulevards of Southern California. "Hood Pass Intact" features a deep, one-note bass pulse, a dreamy bell-synth loop, and the gauzy boogie synths that Dam is known for. Add some gunshot sounds and the high frequency hip-hop squelch endemic to LA, and you have a perfect piece for cruising through the hood. The man just keeps getting hotter.

Also, I've abandoned today's original post idea to present a track that I totally slept on last year which Tietjen's mix introduced to me: Timo Maas' 2008 big-room banger, "Subtellite." Jesus, this track is fucking insane: deep kicks, secondary tribal percussion with plenty of flourishes, gorgeously-syncopated stuttering Spanish-guitar bits, and a bass-line that propels the listener into the outer hemisphere, with the builds to make it even more evident. Images of people losing their shit to this dance on the eyelids. Most definitely one of the best tracks of 2008, in retrospect, and I cannot get enough of it. Something that you should hear, for real! On Cocoon Recordings.
