gettin' down again

So, after a week of recovery, I'm back! Strep throat is one hell of pain— can't imagine how I managed to survive so many bouts with it as a child.

Anyway, today I'm bringing you a 2005 joint from Theo Parrish, whom I've been thinking about quite a bit since my attendance at a recent poetry reading by Peter Culley. It isn't often that I meet other poets who are into house and techno, so when Peter read his astounding piece, "House is a Feeling," I was heartened. (You can read that poem here and order his excellent book Hammertown here). After the reading, we ended up talking about Theo Parrish, Mr. Fingers and other old-school heads for a while. Peter, this one's for you.

"Capritarious #7" is a slo-mo deep house beat featuring some crystalline hi-hats, heavy kicks, and secondary percussive flourishes that really make for a funky good time. Paired with one of the wonkiest synth lines Parrish has ever come up with and hi-frequency string rides, the piece has an excellently dusty, epic feel. It really is ten minutes of deep house bliss! Highly recommended.

Yesterday, I caved and bought some records at Tweekin in the Lower Haight, and also had some good talk with Chris, who runs this blog and is quite a knowledgeable head. Though I eventually settled on an '05 joint from Theo Parrish and the fantastic Move Me EP on Philpot from MXM, Chris wisely recommended the excellent Serge Ponsar track below-- a regular feature in Ron Hardy's sets back in the day, and definitely a fantastic buy.



Some downloadable stuff coming later today-- I'm gunning for this amazing upcoming track from Space-cadet Nima Gorji, but who knows?

Today, that promised track from Theo Parrish. Taken from his Ugly Edits Volume 5, his edit of the Dells' "No Way Back" is typical Parrish style-- he takes and loops the best parts of this funky soul classic, and stretches it for miles. Best for driving, lazing about in the park, or sunning on the beach!

Next up, a 1975 disco classic one-off from Shirley & Company. I've always wanted to hear an edit of this, and very well might try my hand at it sometime soon, but until then, the original will have to do. Shirley Goodman was a soul and Christian singer whose career was over by the mid-70s, but she was persuaded to do the lead vocals on "Shame, Shame, Shame," which might very well be one of the best soul-tinged early disco tracks. Though it is veritably nowhere on the bpm scale, it is funky as hell and might have some of the most bewilderingly awesome lyrics ever. Let's hear it for Shirley! And yes, I know that this mp3 is a bit old-sounding, but hell, some tracks sound better from a dirty old 45 than any other recording medium.

Only recently did I really start digging into Theo Parrish-- his signature EQs had always turned me off, and I didn't really understand why he was creating what he was creating. Well, that's over-- perhaps it's the spring or something, but Parrish is all I want to listen to right now.

"Got A Match" is taken from Ugly Edits Volume 3, one of the best of the series. It is a bouncy, stomping track of truly dirty disco-funk, with insane bass and vocal loops, and a sound that ranges from Idjut Boys-style stoned funk to filthy soul disco a la Major Swellings . Please blast out your ears listening to this track, as it is well worth it.
